Since my enjoyment with horror started so many years ago with the
release of Jaws, I thought it would be the right time to write a little something in its regards. After all, it is shark week!
For me, there isn’t anything more sinister or ruthless then a shark.
Above all other torments, Sharks are the worst. Every time I find my feet
dangling above the darkened abyss, I can’t help but think there is something stalking me, wanting to ultimately sink its teeth into my flesh.
It’s not something that has kept me away from the ocean, or even deep water for that matter, but it is a driving emotion I think about every time I am swimming. Even when I am in a lake, river, or pool, and for that I thank the makers of the great movie Jaws…
I will be the first person to admit that it has affected me personally. The very next day after watching the historic film, I found myself playing close to the water on a California beach when I saw something coming towards me through the
waves. I really thought a shark was coming ashore to devour everyone, starting with me. I ran across the beach warning everyone of the impending doom we were all about to experience, when my dad told me it wasn’t a shark at all. I was incredibly embarrassed, even at four years old. I can only imagine what the poor scuba diver thought when he stood up in the breaking waves and saw me screaming, SHARK! SHARK! My dad sure got a good laugh.
So when you’re at the beach this summer and think about swimming out further then your feet can touch the ground. Think about what may or may not be right there, watching you from the dark depths below. I for one have always peered downward towards my feet hoping that I would make it back to shore alright, and I hope everyone else makes it bacdoes this summer as well…
